Building a terrarium for carnivorous plants 2 - land and flora

After realizing the 'water recirculation system is the time to fill my mini terrarium with soil and carnivorous plants.

Nel dettaglio gli strati di terreno

Figure 1 - Layers of soil

Here are the details of the soil layers (see figure 1):

  • a - expanded clay (~ 4 cm)
  • b - perlite (~ 3 cm)
  • c - a mixture of peat and perlite (~ 6 cm)
  • d - peat (~ 1 cm)
  • and - live sphagnum moss and carnivorous plants (5 different species) + a few pieces of bark

Once I made the layers arranged the transplant of carnivorous plants by putting them in small holes dug in the ground already prepared.
I then fixed a branch and the sphagnum alive to hide the rubber tube, in which I practiced for several holes have the effect of dripping water, obtained by a pump, located on the bottom of the container. Finally I placed the rest of the moss and small pieces of bark on the surface remained free.

Figure 2 - species of carnivorous plants placed in the terrarium

Carnivorous plants are introduced as follows (see Figure 2):

  • a - Sarracenia psittacina
  • b - Cephalotus follicularis
  • c - Drosera capensis
  • d - ern Muscipula "Royal Red"
  • and - Drosera Aliciae

Find all the necessary material and planting was not easy, because the normal greenhouses are often deprived of the right soil and, if they sell carnivorous plants, they take a few species (I live in Bergamo).

Fortunately I found on piantecarnivore.org address the greenhouse Marco "Oliomar" which proved to be extremely knowledgeable and available to advise a novice like me. If you live near Brescia you can find there a good variety of plants and all the material needed to start growing them.

  1. hello,
I read the entire 2 articles and I must say that besides having fun, I have found interesting news, great photos, and an ability to describe very straightforward, very nice.
interesting piece on the LED (I need to explain in detail why it is very interesting), the technique of construction of the terrarium is simple and very functional for me: I see in the next few years a great cultivator of carnivorous plants: very good!

    • Hello, I'm glad to hear from you!
I can only thank you for all these compliments.
The LED panels that I'm using them made by me buying the components in an electronics store ( see article ), the expenditure has been contained, but are just good to illuminate an area as limited as that of my small terrarium.
In short I want to order a panel of 900 LEDs to try it, then let you know ...

  2. x David: I moved your comments in the post for the construction of the lamp led growth that is more relevant, so they can continue the discussion

    • but the expanded clay is wrong! I think that makes basic water!

      • I bought the clay directly from a grower of carnivorous plant expert so I assume that has a pH stabilized. There are liquid expanded clays for specific flowers with pH between 6 and 7.
It 's also best to wash it before use.

  3. the idea and draft are nice but Dionea and Sarracenia Psittaccina SHOULD MAKE WINTER REST outside, because you put them in a terrarium?? O__O

    • True, good point, I'm a neophyte in the cultivation of these plants and I made some mistakes.
Now I have left in the terrarium, only 2 species of Drosera.
